Amazon claims to have developed a novel warehouse robot, named Vulcan, endowed with the capacity to "feel" certain items it interacts with.

The bimanual Vulcan robot, designed to manipulate items within Amazon's warehouse storage units, employs force sensors to discern contact with objects; one arm reorganizes items within a compartment, while the other, fitted with a camera and suction cup, retrieves items.

According to Amazon, Vulcan acquired its training through tangible information, encompassing force and tactile responses, enabling it to handle approximately 75% of Amazon's inventory; furthermore, it possesses the capacity for continuous autonomous enhancement. This robotic system has been operational in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, and has so far successfully processed half a million orders.

Vulcan is the most recent integration into Amazon's extensive collection of warehouse robots, which number in the hundreds of thousands and are deployed globally to process customer orders. Despite critics contending that Amazon's substantial investment in robotics is primarily aimed at substituting its human workforce, the company maintains that its implementation of robots such as Vulcan primarily enhances warehouse safety.
