Google's iOS application is introducing a novel "Simplify" function that employs artificial intelligence to render intricate or specialised online content more readily comprehensible, conveniently remaining within the current web page.
Simplify uses a method from Google Research to improve prompts and uses Gemini to make difficult text easier to understand while keeping the important information. Google's tests showed that the simpler text helped users understand and remember the original information better.
Google probably wants people to keep using its tools and services by offering a feature like Simplify, so they don't need to use other popular tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT when dealing with difficult topics.
Simplify is available by highlighting text within a web page accessed through the Google app and subsequently selecting the "Simplify" option that appears, which generates a condensed version to facilitate comprehension and continued reading.
Google’s research blog shows an example of what this feature might look like. For instance, you might see a part that says: “This condition is very complex and involves the destruction of lung tissue, widespread scarring, changes in the types of immune cells in the lungs, more production of things that affect the immune system, and a lot of changes to the blood vessels in the lungs.”
This complicated condition includes damage to the lung tissue from emphysema, which harms the air sacs, and widespread scarring of the lung tissue, known as fibrosis. The immune cells in the lungs change, and the body produces more substances that control the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change significantly.
Google states the rationale behind the feature is to simplify the understanding of intricate subjects individuals may encounter when pursuing new knowledge online.
In a blog post, Google stated its goal: to create models that can accurately rephrase complex ideas without adding mistakes or leaving out important details. They also said that the new text should help people understand difficult topics while keeping the original information correct.
Simplify is poised for deployment to iOS users throughout the current week.
