Amazon says it has made a new robot for its warehouses, named Vulcan, that can 'feel' some of the things it touches.
The two-armed robot called Vulcan moves goods in Amazon's warehouses and uses sensors to feel when it touches something. One arm moves things in a space, and the other arm, with a camera and suction cup, picks up items.
Amazon states that Vulcan learned from physical information, such as how much force to use and how things feel when touched, to select about 75% of their products. They also say the robot can learn and get better over time. Vulcan is currently used in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, and has already handled 500,000 orders in these locations.
Vulcan is the newest robot in Amazon's warehouses, where hundreds of thousands of robots help prepare customer orders worldwide. Some people say Amazon uses robots to replace human workers, but Amazon claims the robots, like Vulcan, actually make their warehouses safer places to work.
