On Tuesday, Google announced they have launched a new version of their main AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro. It's called Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition), and Google says it performs better than many common tests.
You can now use Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) through the Gemini API and Google’s Vertex AI and AI Studio platforms. It has the same price as the Gemini 2.5 Pro model it replaces. You can also find it in Google’s Gemini app for the web and for mobile devices.
This model is being released before Google's yearly I/O conference for developers (that's why it's called the "I/O edition"). At this conference, Google is likely to show many new models, as well as tools and platforms that use AI. The company is trying very hard to be the most popular and successful in the competitive AI industry. Competitors like OpenAI and xAI are also planning to release new models soon that are expected to work very well.
Google says their Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is much better at coding and making websites that people can use. They also say it's better at changing and fixing code to do what you want.
In a blog post, Google said that Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is the best in the WebDev Arena Leaderboard. This is a test that measures how well a model can create nice-looking and useful web apps. Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) is also very good at understanding videos. It got a score of 84.8% on VideoMME, which is a well-known test for video understanding.
Google said in a blog post that the new Gemini 2.5 Pro will be better for developers who already use it. It will help with coding and fix problems developers have reported, like making fewer mistakes when calling functions and making function calls happen more often. The model is naturally good at making nice-looking websites, and you can still guide it.
