Amazon has unveiled its newly engineered warehouse robot, "Vulcan," boasting the capability to "perceive" certain objects it comes into contact with.
Equipped with two arms, the Vulcan robot maneuvers within Amazon's warehouse storage areas, facilitating item displacement. Utilizing force sensors, it detects physical contact with objects. One arm serves to arrange items within compartments, while the other, fitted with a camera and suction cups, is engineered for grasping items.
According to Amazon, Vulcan has been trained on physical data, such as force and tactile feedback, enabling it to handle approximately 75% of Amazon's inventory and possessing the capacity for continuous self-improvement over time. This robot is currently operational in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, having already processed half a million orders.
Vulcan represents merely the latest addition to Amazon's extensive fleet of warehouse robots, joining the hundreds of thousands already operational globally to fulfill customer orders within storage facilities. Despite critics suggesting Amazon's significant investment in robotics aims to displace human workers, the company maintains its purpose is to enhance warehouse safety through innovations like Vulcan.
