Amazon has disclosed that its recently engineered warehouse automaton, christened "Vulcan," possesses the capacity to "perceive" a subset of the objects with which it makes contact.
Harnessed with a bi-manipulator system, the Vulcan robot is proficient in maneuvering commodities within warehousing facilities overseen by Amazon, employing force-sensitive tactile feedback mechanisms to discern contact with objects; specifically, one arm is dedicated to the methodical arrangement of articles within designated compartments, whilst the other is equipped with a vision-guided suction-based gripper for object acquisition.
According to Amazon, Vulcan has been trained on physical data, including force and tactile feedback, enabling it to handle approximately 75% of Amazon's inventory and possessing the capacity for autonomous improvement over time. This automaton is already operational in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, and has demonstrably processed a backlog of 500,000 orders to date.
Vulcan stands as merely the latest accession to Amazon's extensive armada of warehouse robotics, an ensemble numbering in the hundreds of thousands deployed across its global network of fulfillment centers to dispatch customer requisitions.
While some detractors postulate Amazon's substantial robotic outlays are a harbinger of human labor displacement, the corporation vigorously contends otherwise, positing that apparatuses such as Vulcan are instead predicated on bolstering warehouse safety protocols.
