Amazon announced that it has created a new robot for its warehouses called Vulcan, which can "feel" certain items it touches.
The two-armed robot, called Vulcan, can move things in Amazon's warehouses. It uses special sensors to feel when it touches something. One arm moves items around in a storage area, and the other arm, which has a camera and can pick things up with air, takes items.
Amazon reports that Vulcan learned from real-world information, including details about how things feel when touched. This training helps it select about 75% of Amazon's products. Amazon also states that the robot can get better at its job on its own over time. Vulcan is currently being used in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, and it has already handled 500,000 orders.
Vulcan is the newest type of robot working in Amazon's warehouses. Amazon has hundreds of thousands of robots in its large buildings around the world to help process customer orders. Some people say that Amazon is using robots to replace human workers, but Amazon claims that robots such as Vulcan only help to make their workplaces safer.
