Some people think TikTok is making our attention spans shorter. But, people all over the world are watching a live show from a Swedish TV channel they probably don't know. This show is about the Great Moose Migration.
For thousands of years, moose have crossed the Ångerman River each spring to find a warmer home for the summer. But since 2019, people around the world can watch this journey for three weeks. A Swedish TV channel broadcasts a live video of the migration online, using more than 30 cameras to film the slow movement.
The livestream usually shows peaceful views of forests and rivers. If you are lucky, you might see a moose walking by. The moose doesn't know how famous it is around the world. It's just a moose, walking happily without any worries.
Usually, the stream makes almost no sound. At other moments, you can hear the wind blow strongly and the birds sing. It's pleasant, even if you forget you have the live stream open on your computer and are suddenly surprised by a group of creatures far away.
As one Swedish student told the AP: "I feel relaxed, but at the same time I think, 'Oh, there's a moose. Oh, what if there's a moose? I can't go to the toilet!'"
The stream keeps going even at night.
Even without sunlight, night vision cameras let us see all the moose activity.
But the clear black and white picture looks more like "The Blair Witch Project" than National Geographic.
Still, seeing a slightly strange moose is still seeing a moose.
Last year, 9 million people watched SVT's live video of moose. This is quite good when you compare it to Discovery Channel's Shark Week, which had over 22 million viewers in 2023. It's even more impressive because SVT only streams nature videos and has a small team of 15 people.
These livestreams are very interesting because they are so different from what we usually see online.
But the moose don't need anything from us. They are not even aware we are here, supporting them.
