As TikTok enhances its search capabilities, the platform is now displaying reviews for certain locations directly within the comments section of videos.
Users of TikTok who are able to utilise this novel feature will observe a distinct "Reviews" tab positioned on the right once they select to access the video's comments.
For example, encountering a video of New York City's Central Park, if the creator has designated the location, will allow you to access users' star ratings, written critiques, and any accompanying photographic material.
You can also select a reviewer's username to navigate to their TikTok profile from this section, setting this feature apart from a prior Google Maps integration, which was indicated by a Google Maps icon.
While the new feature might be a desirable enhancement for certain users, others could perceive it as cluttering the user interface during content consumption.
This action represents TikTok's continued efforts to broaden its search capabilities in direct competition with Google.
In 2022, a Google executive proposed that TikTok was encroaching upon its core services, Search and Maps, notably among younger users. Moving forward to the present, TikTok has contested Google's pre-eminence in multiple domains.
Beyond its popularity among Gen Z for discovering locations, TikTok enhanced its search features last year by incorporating image recognition, enabling users to upload or capture photos to locate analogous items within TikTok Shop.
Commencing in September 2024, TikTok broadened its advertising capabilities, enabling advertisers to target search results through "TikTok Search Ads Campaigns," a keyword-driven mechanism aimed at presenting brands' advertisements within search outcomes.
Whether TikTok intends to implement its reviews tab on a larger scale remains uncertain, as the corporation chose not to offer a statement prior to publication; nonetheless, our evaluations at TechCrunch revealed that merely a subset of videos with a specified location exhibited this functionality.
