Elon Musk has indicated a provisional launch date of June 22nd for Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
Musk stated on X, his social media platform, that the date was subject to change, citing Tesla's "extreme vigilance regarding safety" as the reason.
Investors, Wall Street analysts, and Tesla fans have been eagerly awaiting the introduction of Tesla's self-driving taxi service, especially since Elon Musk mentioned earlier this year that it would start in Austin sometime in June.
In a recent CNBC interview, Musk shared his plans for the new robotaxi service. He explained that initially, the taxis would be watched remotely and restricted to specific, safe areas of the city. He also mentioned starting with about ten taxis, then quickly increasing the number and expanding the service to cities like Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Francisco.
For ten years, Musk has consistently promised fully self-driving cars "next year." However, the pressure is now mounting as Tesla starts its new self-driving taxi service. This comes at a time when sales of Tesla's electric vehicles are declining because of more competition, changes to its popular Model Y car, and the negative effects of Musk's growing involvement in politics.
The Austin launch happened after Musk had a big public argument with then-President Trump about the government's tax law. Because of this, some experts are worried that Trump might get back at him by asking federal safety regulators to get involved if there are any problems with the robotaxis.
