Nelly Korda won the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday. It was at Riviera. It was her second straight major title. The world No. 1 beat Charley Hull and Gaby Lopez by one shot. Her final-round 2-under 69 gave her 8-under 276. She won her fourth major. She also won $2.5 million.
The finish was tense. Korda’s short putt on 18 hit the left edge. It went around the cup. Then it dropped. Korda looked shocked. Then she laughed. Korda said the win was “even sweeter.” She said this because of the dramatic finish.
Korda started the week with a 73. Then she changed her grip. Her sister Jessica gave her advice. Korda then shot back-to-back 67s. She shared the lead before the final round. On Sunday, she stayed steady in windy weather. She was the only player among the top seven without a back-nine bogey.
Hull and Lopez both pushed hard late. But neither could catch Korda. Hull finished second for the fifth time in a major. In Gee Chun finished two shots back. Korda said the week was hard work. She said major championships need a strong mind.
