On Monday morning, the owner of the Athletics team, John Fisher, stood in front of many people. Behind him, there were big piles of dirt, construction trucks, and the exact spot for home plate at the new baseball stadium in Las Vegas. He told everyone, "We are the team for Las Vegas."
Many people watched as the team started to build a new baseball park. Important people like Rob Manfred from MLB, government leaders, and old Athletics players were there. Young baseball players also watched. The new park will cost a lot of money, $1.75 billion, and can hold 33,000 people. It should be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have agreed to give up to $380 million of public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said, "I'm sure this will be finished in 2028. The workers here are ready to start."
It's good to see how important today is. The next three years will be good for our town, for the building project, the new jobs, and everything else that will happen as this building is built, starting very soon.
Badain did a similar job when he worked for the Raiders football team. He helped the team move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. He also helped to get permission and build the new Allegiant Stadium, which cost $2 billion.
The Raiders stayed in Oakland for three years in the same stadium as the A's while their new stadium, Allegiant Stadium, was being built. The Raiders still had a good connection with their fans in the Bay Area, even though they were going to leave. But A's fans were very angry because their team was going to move, and they didn't like how it was happening.
The team could not stay in Oakland, so they played their last season in the old stadium last year. Now, they are playing about an hour away in West Sacramento for at least three years, while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
Fisher said, "We are a local team. We want to get young fans first. If we get the kids, we can also get their parents. It does not take much time to get fans. But it takes a long time to have a winning team."
"We want to keep improving. Building a team is like building anything. It can take a long time, like building a stadium. We believe we have what we need to do well."
The stadium will be built on nine acres of land. This land is at Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. It is 35 acres in total and belongs to Bally's. The Tropicana's buildings were removed in October to make space for the new stadium.
The A's want to do well in their temporary home and also get ready for their future home. Each player has a picture of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one arm and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is because they have a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority approved important documents. These documents are the last big steps for the A's to become the team of Las Vegas.
The stadium looks like the Sydney Opera House because it has five parts that go over each other. There is a big window where people can see the Las Vegas Strip. Instead of one big air conditioner, cool air will come from under the seats.
This stadium will be the smallest in MLB. Usually, the Tampa Bay Rays play at Tropicana Field. It can hold 25,000 people if the top part is closed. If not, it can hold almost 40,000 people.
The Rays are playing in a smaller stadium this year, like the A's. This is because a hurricane damaged their usual stadium. We don't know where the Rays will play in the future, and new owners might buy the team soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field. It has 34,830 seats now. When it opened in 1994, it had 43,345 seats.
The A's baseball team will move to Las Vegas. They will be the fourth big sports team there. The other teams are the Raiders football team, the Golden Knights hockey team, and the Aces women's basketball team.
Manfred said, "I think this is a good place for us. There are many people here, other sports are doing well, and many tourists visit. I am sure this team will do very well in Las Vegas."
