With piles of dirt, construction vehicles, and the precise spot for home plate at the new Athletics ballpark behind him on Monday morning, team owner John Fisher spoke to a large group, stating clearly: "We are Vegas' team."
Many people, including MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, state and local officials, former Athletics stars like Rollie Fingers and Dave Stewart, and young baseball players, watched as the team began building a new, modern ballpark. This stadium will cost $1.75 billion, hold 33,000 people, and is planned to be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have authorized the use of up to $380 million in public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain stated with strong conviction, "I am certain this project will be finished by 2028. The local workforce is clearly prepared and keen to start."
It's encouraging to witness the positive impact of today's events, and the upcoming three years are expected to bring substantial advantages to the community, including progress on the construction project, new job opportunities, and various other developments as this building begins to rise, possibly starting tonight.
Badain faced similar challenges when he worked for the NFL's Raiders. He was very important in the team's move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020, and also in getting approval for and building the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium.
While Allegiant Stadium was being built, the Raiders stayed in Oakland for three seasons, sharing their stadium with the A's. Even though the Raiders kept a strong connection with their fans in the Bay Area, A's fans were very angry about their team leaving soon and how it was handled.
The deteriorating conditions in Oakland made it impossible for the franchise to stay there, leading to their final season in the old stadium. As a result, the A's are now playing in a Triple-A ballpark in West Sacramento, California, for at least three years while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
Fisher explained that as a local team, they aimed to attract the youngest fans first, believing that engaging children quickly leads to their parents' support. He emphasized that while this process is faster than one might expect, achieving consistent success on the field is what truly takes time and builds a lasting fanbase.
Our aim is to expand on what we already have, and creating a team is similar to any other building project. It can sometimes take longer than expected, much like constructing a stadium. Nevertheless, we believe we have the necessary elements to achieve significant success.
The stadium will be built on nine acres of the 35-acre site owned by Bally's, located at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The Tropicana's resort towers were demolished overnight last October to make space for the new ballpark.
The A's are attempting to manage both their current temporary location and their future plans. This is evident in their uniforms, which feature Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one sleeve and a Las Vegas logo on the other, as part of a three-year sponsorship deal with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority approved the lease, non-relocation agreement, and development plans, which were the final significant steps for the Athletics to move to Las Vegas.
The stadium's design, with its five overlapping levels, closely resembles the famous Sydney Opera House. A large glass window behind the outfield provides an open-air feel with views of the Las Vegas Strip. Instead of a single central cooling system, air conditioning will be delivered directly through the seats.
This will be MLB's smallest stadium, even though Tropicana Field, which is the usual home of the Tampa Bay Rays, can hold 25,000 people when its upper sections are closed. Otherwise, it has a capacity of just under 40,000 seats.
Due to Hurricane Milton severely damaging their domed stadium, the Rays, similar to the A's, are playing their games this season at a Triple-A ballpark. The future home of the Tampa Bay team is uncertain, and it's possible the club will soon have new owners.
Progressive Field, home to Cleveland's baseball team, currently accommodates 34,830 spectators, a reduction from its original capacity of 43,345 when the stadium first opened its gates in 1994.
The Oakland A's are poised to become Las Vegas's fourth major league professional franchise, following in the footsteps of the Raiders, the NHL's Golden Knights, and the WNBA's Aces.
Manfred stated that the combination of positive demographic trends, the established success of other sports teams, and the strong tourism industry makes Las Vegas an excellent market, and he is very confident that the new team will do well there.
