Japan has a new sumo champion called Onosato. He is the first Japanese champion since 2017, because most champions recently have been from Mongolia. Onosato is 24 years old and weighs 191 kilograms. He became champion after winning a big sumo competition. Onosato is from Ishikawa, an area that had a bad earthquake and tsunami in 2024. He wants to use his new position to help the people in his hometown. He will now compete with Hoshoryu, who is also a champion from Mongolia. They will compete in a tournament in July.
