Non-French athletes at the French Open tennis tournament have complained about the very unfriendly atmosphere when they play against French opponents. They have compared it to a very intense football game. The crowd's aggressive behavior, like booing, whistling, and shouting insults, caused the tournament organizers to stop selling alcohol in the stands last year. Some athletes, such as Nicolás Jarry from Chile, have said their experiences were "disgusting" and the worst of their lives. Because of the bad crowd behavior, tournament director Amélie Mauresmo stated that security has been increased, and chair umpires have been given more power to step in and report bad behavior. However, not all athletes are bothered by the unfriendly atmosphere. For example, Belgian player Elise Mertens said it's a normal part of tennis. French player Corentin Moutet admitted the pressure of playing at home and advised players to ignore it.
