Formula 1 team Alpine has altered its driver lineup, elevating Franco Colapinto for a minimum of the forthcoming five Grand Prix races while benching Jack Doohan.
Alpine announced the alteration on Wednesday, following Oliver Oakes's resignation as team principal the previous day. The team stated that Flavio Briatore would maintain his role as executive advisor and undertake Oakes's responsibilities.
In a statement, Alpine announced that Colapinto would partner with Pierre Gasly from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, with a subsequent assessment planned before the British Grand Prix in July.
Alpine currently languishes in ninth place in the Formula 1 constructors' championship after the initial six rounds. Their subsequent race weekend is slated for May 16th to 18th at the historic Imola circuit.
During Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix, Doohan was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the initial lap, subsequently crashing on the second lap.
Reports circulating in the media about a potential driver change were refuted by Oakes prior to the Miami Grand Prix weekend, who had previously confirmed the continued presence of the Australian rookie in the car.
Doohan, who failed to accumulate any points in his seven Grand Prix appearances with a highest position of 13th, will resume his role as the team's reserve driver.
Jack Doohan, whose father Mick Doohan was a five-time motorcycle world champion, started his Formula 1 career at the end of the 2024 season. He began this year racing for Alpine at the first race in Australia, taking the place of Esteban Ocon, who left Alpine after a bad year in 2024.
Colapinto was appointed as a reserve driver for Alpine in January, having competed for Williams in 2024 and achieving five points following his replacement of Logan Sargeant in August.
