Lawyers for the NCAA agreement suggested a new idea on Wednesday about how many players can be on a team.

Lawyers told the court that schools should make lists of all the students they stopped from playing sports. This is because a court agreement is expected soon. The number of students could be very large.

These students, called 'Designated Student-Athletes', can be asked to come back and try to get a place on the team again, but they might not get one. Or, they can go to different schools.

So those athletes will not be part of the new team rules that started last year.

The plan would also help students who were promised a place in college but then lost it. This help would continue as long as those students can play sports in college.

Wilken has agreed to the main parts of the deal. This deal lets each school give up to $20.5 million each year to their athletes. Also, players who said the NCAA and five big groups unfairly stopped them from making money from their name, picture, and likeness will get over $2.7 billion in money they should have had.

The newest idea came after two weeks of hard work. Wilken told the lawyers for both teams to talk again. He said the rule about how many players could be on the team was not okay.

The plan wants to change the rules for sports teams. Now, there are rules about how many scholarships a team can give. For example, football teams can give 85 scholarships. The new plan will have rules about how many players can be on a team. For example, football teams can have 105 players. Schools can give scholarships to all players if they want, but it will be very expensive. Many people think that some players will not get any scholarships.

Wilken felt bad for the many players who lost their places on the teams. This happened when schools started to follow the rules of the agreement. About twelve players told their stories at a meeting on April 7.

Wilken asked the lawyers to change that part of the agreement. The NCAA first said no, saying it would make things more difficult. But Wilken told them to do it anyway or the whole plan might fail.

The lawyers for the people who sued said they did even better than Wilken. They let schools take back players they had removed, and it did not count against their limit. They also made this possible for a new school.

They wrote in their court paper that they think these changes to the agreement are more than the court asked for.

The lawyers said they are not sure if the athletes will get their places on the team again.

The schools said they can still pick which players are on their teams. This is true even with or without new rules about how many players can be on a team. The agreement makes sure that players who lost their spot on a team because of the new rules will be in the same place as if the rules were never made. This means the new rules don't apply to them.

The judge will probably give people who don't like the plan a short time to share their problems before she decides. Steve Berman, a main lawyer for the people who started the case, said this week that the people who don't like the plan won't be pleased with the new idea.

Time is running out for the NCAA and the many schools and athletes it represents.
