He was a fashion and costume designer.
Mackie defined 1970s Hollywood glamour.
He won nine Emmy Awards.
He won a Tony Award.
He was nominated for three Oscars.
He designed gowns for Madonna and Barbra Streisand.
He also designed for Sharon Stone, Diana Ross and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
He made concert costumes for Pink.
He also sketched a gown for Marilyn Monroe.
She wore it to sing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy.
The gown was sheer and beaded.
Mackie grew up in Southern California.
Technicolor musicals inspired him.
He worked for costume designer Edith Head.
Then he joined "The Carol Burnett Show."
He and Burnett became close friends.
They created characters like Starlet O'Hara.
Her curtain-rod dress is now in the Smithsonian.
Later he dressed Cher for "The Sonny and Cher Show."
He also dressed her for many Academy Awards.
She wore a famous sheer gown to the 1974 Met Gala.
Tributes came from fellow designers.
Actors who wore his work also gave tributes.
Kristin Chenoweth called him a "legend."
Isaac Mizrahi wrote that he was heartbroken.
Mackie said his motto was to make people look better than ever.
He did not want to change them.
He also said his outfits were costumes for a character.
They were not just fashion.
