Though Billie Eilish's name holds significant recognition, she didn't necessarily cherish it during her formative years.
In a recent interview for British Vogue's May cover story, the acclaimed singer-songwriter, who has won multiple Grammy and Oscar awards, was questioned by a group of well-known friends, including Ariana Grande, Chappell Roan, SZA, and Greta Gerwig. Among those posing questions was the actor Idris Elba, who inquired whether Eilish had ever felt self-conscious about her name and sought to know who was the first person she encountered with the same name, and what impact that meeting had on her.
The "Birds of a Feather" artist confessed, "As a child, I profoundly disliked my name. I was constantly told, ‘I thought Billie was a boy's name,' which became a persistent refrain. I recall being intensely frustrated and desperately desiring a distinctly feminine name, such as Violet or Lavender, some kind of, you know, aesthetically pleasing, botanical name."
Yet, the singer now finds it inconceivable to have a name different from Billie, a sentiment likely shared by her extensive fanbase.
"It's quite amusing because now I cannot envision any alternative name in existence that would be suitable for me other than Billie. I hold a profound affection for my name," Eilish remarked. "It genuinely seems to be the sole conceivable designation for my identity. I simply feel it aligns flawlessly with me and my essence."
The vocalist, known for her song "Wildflower," explained that she was named in honour of her grandfather, William, thus "in essence, the first Billy I was acquainted with was my grandfather, although I never had the opportunity to meet him."
She went on to say, with a chuckle, "The first woman I recall encountering with the name Billie was Billie Piper, known for her role in Doctor Who. Given my strong affection for the series, I was naturally quite enthused by this. However, concurrently, I felt a sense of envy and frustration, questioning why someone would utter my name and be referring to another individual. Utterly unacceptable!"
Beyond Piper and Eilish, numerous other prominent personalities have shared this given name throughout history, such as Billie Jean King, Billie Holiday, Billie Joe Armstrong, Billie Lourd, Billie Burke, Billie Whitelaw, and Billie Dove.
