Canada put tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods on Tuesday.
This was its answer to the latest U.S. tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S. demands could hurt key Canadian industries.
He added that they could also limit Canada’s independence.
The world is watching this dispute closely.
It is a test of whether a smaller U.S. ally can stand up to President Donald Trump’s economic pressure.
The Canadian tariffs cover hundreds of American products.
These include steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics and farm equipment.
The rates are 15%, 25% or 50%.
Canada says these measures match Washington’s tariffs exactly.
They cover about 6% of the $333.6 billion that the U.S. sent to Canada last year.
Trump has threatened more action.
He may ban sales of Bombardier aircraft unless the company builds planes in the U.S.
He has also warned of 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel next year.
Canadian officials say this could hurt factories and raise vehicle prices across North America.
That is because parts cross the border many times during production.
Trump’s pressure has had the opposite effect in Canada.
It has brought public support behind Carney.
Canadians have stopped traveling to the U.S. and have boycotted American goods.
Experts say the relationship will not return to how it was before Trump.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said, “I’m convinced that we will be able to show the world that Canada will win this trade war.”
