Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia have started a lawsuit against 23andMe, a company that tests genes, to stop them from selling personal genetic information without permission. This legal action comes after a biotech company suggested buying the company, which is having financial problems. Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield stated that sensitive information, including biological samples, DNA data, health details, and medical records, should not be sold unless each person gives clear and informed permission. 23andMe, which began in 2006, provides DNA testing kits that help customers learn about their family history and find relatives. However, the company has struggled to find a way to make money since it first offered shares to the public in 2021. This led to them cutting 40% of their staff and filing for bankruptcy in March. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, which plans to buy the company for $256 million, has promised to follow 23andMe's privacy rules and all relevant laws. An independent expert on consumer privacy has been chosen to carefully examine the planned purchase and how it might affect people's privacy.
