Starbucks workers did not like the new rules for clothes at work on Thursday. They stopped working to show they did not like them.

Many Starbucks workers are on strike. They don't like the new rules for clothes. About 2,000 workers in 120 shops are stopping work. This started on Sunday. A group called Starbucks Workers United said this. They speak for the workers.

Starbucks said that workers must wear new clothes from Monday. They need to wear a black shirt and black, blue, or brown pants. This is for workers in the U.S. and Canada.

Before, baristas could wear more dark colors and shirts with designs. Now, Starbucks says new rules will help green aprons be seen better. This will make customers feel more at home in the stores.

Starbucks workers have a group that speaks for them. This group wants to talk about the rules for how workers dress.

Paige Summers works at Starbucks in Hanover. She said Starbucks is not doing well. She thinks Starbucks should listen to its workers. Now, Starbucks is thinking about new clothes for workers. Paige thinks this is not important. She said customers do not care about the color of clothes. They do not want to wait a long time for coffee.

Some people said the company was wrong to sell Starbucks clothes that workers can't wear anymore. These clothes were sold on a website for workers. Starbucks said they would give each worker two free black shirts when they told them about the new rules for clothes.

On Wednesday, a Starbucks group said 1,000 workers stopped working at 75 shops in the U.S. Starbucks said the strike did not change much at its 10,000 U.S. shops. They said some shops closed for a short time because of the strike.

Starbucks said it would be better if the union tried to talk instead of protesting with black shirts. Most of our stores (over 99%) are open and serving customers this week.

People who read the news had different ideas about the rules for clothes at Starbucks. Some people think the workers should not complain, because other shops also have rules for clothes. Other people think Starbucks should try to make better drinks and keep workers happy, not worry about clothes.

Maddie Mucklow works at a Starbucks in Seattle. She likes the new rules.

Mucklow said, "I think the new clothes rules were hard for the people I work with. But the rules help us know how to dress well and be ourselves."

Since 2021, workers at Starbucks in the U.S. have been joining a union. Starbucks and the union still need to agree on a contract, even after talking again in February 2024.

This week, the workers' group said they told the labor board that Starbucks did not talk about the new work clothes rules.
