The Japanese economy shrank by 0.7% in the first three months of the year, according to new numbers from the government on Friday. This happened because trade problems caused by the US president, Donald Trump, hurt sales to other countries and made people less sure about spending money.

The Japanese economy shrank a little bit (0.2%) from January to March, compared to the last three months of the year before. This was a surprise because experts thought it would be better. It's the first time in a year that the economy has gotten smaller. This information comes from the government.

The country's exports went down by about 2.3% compared to last year. People spent the same amount of money as before, but businesses invested 5.8% more money.

The report also says that even small companies that sell things in America might be affected. This is because taxes on goods can change the world economy and what people want to buy, which can have a big effect on these companies.

The newest information shows that the economy is still weak. Because of this, the central bank will probably stop raising interest rates.

But until now, Shigeru Ishiba, who wants to be Prime Minister, has not said he agrees with this idea. Japan's government is having money problems because it costs a lot to take care of people.

In the last three months of 2024, the economy grew by 2.4% compared to the year before.
