Officials in South Korea said on Wednesday that a court in the Czech Republic stopped a big project for South Korea to build two nuclear power plants there. They said this is only a small problem and they are sure the project will still happen.
A group of companies from South Korea, led by Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, wanted to finish a deal this week with CEZ, the biggest electricity company in the Czech Republic. But a court in the Czech Republic stopped CEZ from signing the paper. The court is looking at a problem from a French company called EDF. EDF did not win the chance to do the work, but the South Koreans did.
South Korea's Minister said the court's decision means the contract will be signed later. But he said everything else will still happen on time if the deal happens. He also said the Czech government did not think the court would stop the deal. And he said the company CEZ wants to try to change the court's decision.
We don't know when the court in Czechia will decide about that appeal.
Ahn said the Czech government didn't think EDF's claims were a big problem. They asked us to come to the signing meeting. He also said the government's idea seemed different from what the court decided.
The Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, said on Wednesday that his government agrees with the court's decision. He also said he thinks the judges and the court know how important this decision is for the safety of the Czech Republic and what the country wants.
Lee Ju-Ho, the president of South Korea, said that South Korea will talk a lot with the Czech Republic to finish the deal fast.
In July, a company called CEZ chose KHNP to build two large nuclear parts at the Dukovany plant. Another company, EDF, was not chosen. Last week, EDF went to court because they were unhappy with how the choice was made.
Before he lost his job last month, the former president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, wanted to sell more nuclear power to other countries. He said that the government before him had made this business worse because they wanted to use less nuclear power in South Korea. His government wanted to sell 10 nuclear power plants by 2030.
