Russia launched a relentless overnight barrage of missiles and drones against cities across Ukraine, with the assault persisting into Thursday's daylight hours as explosions reverberated through Kyiv throughout the morning.

Ukraine is critically short of U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles, which are vital to counter Russia's ballistic missiles, and Moscow's fast jet-powered drones have posed an additional challenge since the Russian military's full-scale invasion began four and a half years ago.

Ukrainian officials assert that Russia is amassing missile reserves and launching substantial offensives at intervals of mere days, aiming to deplete Ukrainian defenses through sheer numerical superiority.

In retaliation, Ukraine has struck strategically significant targets within Russian territory, as both nations inflict reciprocal devastation upon one another.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had carried out a "massive" strike on targets in nine Ukrainian cities, which began after nightfall on Wednesday.

It described the targets as military-related, including industrial facilities, oil refineries, logistics hubs, and port infrastructure.

Civilian areas, including apartment blocks, sustained damage.

The barrage claimed the life of a 78-year-old woman in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and another individual in the northern Kharkiv region, with at least 14 people reported wounded elsewhere, according to Ukrainian officials.

“Russia continues to invest in missiles and in expanding its war, and that means more countermeasures are needed,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media, noting pledges made earlier this week by European nations to deliver additional air defense support.

He underscored that these measures must be complemented by additional ballistic missile defense packages, procured through European purchases of American weaponry.

Although the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that only military targets were hit, Moscow appears intent on damaging Ukrainian businesses and undermining the country's economy through strikes on private enterprises, following Ukraine's long-range drone attacks that created financial strain for the Kremlin.

Russian drones struck three major distribution centers, destroying warehouses of a toy store chain and a confectionery company, and damaging another run by an electronics retailer, the companies said.

Furthermore, Moscow persisted in its endeavors to cripple the Ukrainian power grid ahead of the harsh winter months.

Four powerful glide bombs destroyed generating equipment at the combined heat and power plant in the southern Kherson region, forcing its shutdown, operator Naftogaz reported.

Zelenskyy was scheduled to visit neighboring Moldova on Thursday to mark its national day commemorating its 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.

Ukraine proclaimed its independence in the same year.

Russia’s neighbors in Eastern Europe fear that its invasion of Ukraine could precipitate a broader conflict, and the incursion of drones into their airspace has only exacerbated their apprehension.

Moldova's Ministry of Defense reported on Thursday that five drones had intruded into its airspace overnight, yet it refrained from attributing the incursion to any specific party.

Ukraine’s air force reported that its defenses intercepted or neutralized seven Russian ballistic missiles, though it did not specify the means by which this was accomplished.

Overnight, four districts of Kyiv were subjected to attack, resulting in damage to residential buildings, a school, and a medical facility, with no casualties reported, as stated by city police.

Russian forces struck industrial facilities and energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s central Poltava region, according to Vitalii Diakivnych, head of the Poltava regional military administration.

The southern Odesa region also came under a major Russian attack lasting more than seven hours, according to Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa regional military administration.

The barrage inflicted damage on a 16-story residential building, two educational facilities, and a grain elevator, he said.

Odesa constitutes a pivotal port for Ukraine's crucial exports of grain and other agricultural commodities.

According to Ukrainian state rail company Ukrzaliznytsia, some services were disrupted by delays exceeding 17 hours in the wake of the attack.

Ukraine has also launched hundreds of long-range drones on an almost nightly basis at targets within Russia.

Ukraine’s General Staff reported that aircraft-launched missiles struck Russia’s primary and secondary command posts near the eastern city of Donetsk, where Ukrainian defenders are facing mounting pressure from a Russian offensive.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Thursday that its air defense systems intercepted 267 Ukrainian drones across 14 Russian regions, the illegally annexed Crimean Peninsula, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea.

Having demolished vast warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s premier online retailer, over recent months, Ukrainian drones are now setting their sights on Ozon, the nation’s second-largest e-commerce enterprise.

Ozon initially reported that its logistics facilities in Orenburg and Ufa had been targeted, though neither site caught fire.

The company later revised its statement, clarifying that only the Ufa facility was attacked, while the Orenburg site had been evacuated as a precaution following an alert but had since resumed normal operations.
