A serious explosion at a chemical plant in Weifang, eastern China, has killed at least five people and injured 19, with six people still missing. The explosion, which happened at a plant owned by Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co., a company that makes pesticides and medical chemicals, broke windows in nearby buildings and sent a lot of smoke into the sky. Students at a nearby school said they smelled something strange after the explosion. More than 230 workers were sent to the scene, and a team was sent to check for possible pollution. This event happened soon after a national meeting that aimed to make the chemical industry safer, showing that workplace safety problems continue in China. Last year, the Gaomi Youdao plant was praised for its good risk management, as it had found and fixed over 800 safety problems.
