A major explosion at a chemical plant in Weifang, a city in eastern China, has killed at least five people and injured 19. Six more people are still missing. The blast happened at a plant owned by Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co., which makes pesticides and medical chemicals. It caused windows in nearby buildings to break and sent a lot of smoke into the air. Students at a nearby school said they smelled something strange after the explosion. More than 230 people were sent to the scene, and a team was sent to check for possible pollution. This incident happened after a national meeting that aimed to make the chemical industry safer, showing that workplace safety issues continue to be a problem in China. Last year, the Gaomi Youdao plant was praised for its good risk management, as it had found and fixed over 800 safety problems.
