In South Korea, a political party had problems and first stopped and then restarted their plan for Kim Moon Soo to be their candidate for president before an election in June.

On Saturday, the People Power Party had a big problem with their leader. They tried to change leader Kim, but they failed. This happened after former President Yoon Suk Yeol left because he used special laws in December. This problem with the leader might mean the party will not win the next election.

Kim, who is conservative and used to be a minister under Yoon, became the PPP’s candidate for president on May 3. He won the main vote with more than half the votes. He beat another candidate who spoke against Yoon’s military rule. But the PPP’s leaders, who are loyal to Yoon, spent the last week trying very hard to get Kim to step down and support Han. They believed Han had a better chance to win against Lee Jae-myung from the Democratic Party.

Han and Kim talked, but they couldn't agree on who should be the candidate. So, the PPP party did something that had never been done before on Saturday morning. They stopped their first vote, canceled Kim's chance to be the candidate, and made Han the new candidate for president and a member of the party. But this change had to be approved by all party members in a phone vote. On Saturday night, the members voted no to the change.

The party voted, but they did not change the candidate. The candidate was angry and said it was a "political coup." Now he is the candidate again and will officially sign up on Sunday.

Kim said that everything would now be back to normal.

Kim is 73 years old. He worked to help workers in the 1970s and 1980s. Later, in the 1990s, he joined a different political group. He said he stopped wanting to be a 'revolutionist' because he saw countries with communist governments fail. After that, he was the leader of Gyeonggi province in South Korea for eight years. He was also a member of the National Assembly three times.

Han was the temporary president after Yoon was removed by the government in December and the court in April. Han left his job in May because he wanted to try to become president. He said his long time working for the public meant he could lead the country. He said this was important because of problems with other countries and trade, made worse by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Han was chosen as the candidate. He asked everyone in the party to work together. He said he listens to what the party members want.

In recent surveys, Han and Kim are not as popular as Lee. Lee helped his party try to remove Yoon. He laughed at the other party's idea to change their candidate. He told reporters on Thursday, "I have heard about marriages that people have to have, but I have never heard about people having to be united."
