South Korea's conservative party had problems choosing their candidate for president before the June 3 election.
On Saturday, the People Power Party had a big problem with their leaders. This happened after they tried to change their leader but it didn't work. This problem started when the former President had to leave because of something he did in December. This might make it hard for the party to win the next election.
Kim, who has traditional ideas and worked for Yoon, became the party's choice for president on May 3rd. He won the vote with more than half, beating another candidate who disagreed with Yoon about using the army. But the party leaders, who support Yoon a lot, spent the last week trying hard to make Kim leave and support Han. They thought Han had a better chance to win against Lee Jae-myung, the main candidate from the other party.
Han and Kim talked, but they could not agree on who should be the candidate. So, the party did something very unusual on Saturday. They stopped the first vote, canceled Kim's chance to be candidate, and made Han a member of the party and the new candidate for president. But, all party members had to vote by phone to agree. This vote happened on Saturday night, and the party members said no to the change.
The party spokesman, Shin Dong-wook, said they couldn't share the numbers. But the party voted and decided not to change the person running. The vote was very close. Kim said the party tried to change him quickly and unfairly. He became the person running again right away. The party said he will officially sign up for the election on Sunday.
"Now things will get back to how they should be," Kim stated.
Kim is 73 years old. He was a well-known leader for workers in the 1970s and 80s. But in the 90s, he joined a conservative party. He said he stopped wanting to be a "revolutionist" because he saw communist countries fall. After that, he was the leader of Gyeonggi province for eight years. He was also elected to the National Assembly three times.
Han was the temporary president after Yoon was removed by the government in December and the court in April. Han quit his job on May 2 because he wanted to be president. He said he has worked for the public for a long time, which means he is good at leading the country when there are problems with other countries and trade, especially because of the rules made by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Han, who wanted the party to be together after he became the candidate, said he accepts what the party members said.
In recent polls, Han and Kim are not as popular as Lee. Lee helped the Democrats try to remove Yoon. He made fun of the PPP for trying to change their candidate. He told reporters, 'I know about forced marriages, but I have never heard of forced unity.'
