Officials stated on Wednesday that Israeli attacks across Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least 92 people, including women, children, and two journalists. Israel is getting ready to increase its military actions in the area, as the damaging war has now been going on for 20 months.
According to health officials, two Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday struck an area in central Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 33 individuals and injuring 86, among them several children, although the actual number of fatalities is probably greater.
The Israeli military refrained from providing immediate comment on the strikes.
On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was unsure if three hostages, previously thought to be alive in Gaza, were still alive. This was a day after US President Donald Trump said that only 21 out of 24 hostages believed to be alive had survived.
The news caused widespread panic among the families of the remaining captives in Gaza.
The new violence on Wednesday happened a few days after Israel agreed to increase its actions in the Palestinian area. This plan involves taking control of Gaza, keeping areas they have captured, forcing Palestinians to move to southern Gaza, and managing how aid is given out with the help of private security companies.
Health officials reported that Wednesday's strikes comprised two assaults on a densely populated market area in Gaza City.
Videos shared online reportedly showed what happened after, with men found dead, including one still sitting in a chair inside a Thai restaurant where local people often met. Several children were also lying still on the ground, covered in blood.
Among the fatalities, according to Gaza's media office, was freelance journalist Yahya Sobeih, who contributed to various local publications and had recently posted an Instagram photo of his infant daughter.
According to Gaza health ministry spokesperson Zaher al-Wahidi, victims of the explosions, some suffering severe injuries, were transported to the nearby Al-Shifa Hospital.
According to the media office, Nour Abdu, another local journalist, lost her life whilst documenting an early Wednesday morning assault on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City.
Also, on Tuesday night, an attack on a school where hundreds of displaced Palestinians were staying killed 27 people, according to officials from the Al-Aqsa Hospital. Among those killed were nine women and three children. This school has been hit many times since the war started.
Israel attributes the civilian deaths to Hamas, asserting the group operates from within civilian infrastructure, such as schools.
Hostilities commenced following an assault on southern Israel by Hamas-led militants, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the capture of approximately 250 hostages.
Israel is also mobilizing tens of thousands of reserve soldiers to execute the scheme, asserting that the plan will be phased and will not be enacted until Trump concludes his regional visit later this month.
If the fighting gets worse, more people will likely die. Since Israel already controls about half of Gaza, keeping control of the area for a long time could mean a military occupation. This would bring up questions about how Israel plans to rule the area, especially as they are thinking about putting Trump's idea to control Gaza into action.
Palestinian health officials say the Israeli attack has killed over 52,000 people in Gaza so far. Many of the dead are women and children. The officials' numbers do not separate fighters from people who are not fighting.
