A new AP-NORC/AAPI Data poll shows that, as the November 3 midterm elections approach, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults are increasingly disillusioned with President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which gives the Democrats a significant advantage on major issues such as the economy and health care.

This survey, conducted jointly by AAPI Data and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research between September 8 and 15, shows that during Trump's second term, approval of his economic performance among AAPI adults has declined.

About a quarter of AAPI adults approve of Trump's overall job performance, yet only around two in ten approve of his handling of the economy; at the same time, the vast majority of AAPI adults regard the economy as one of the most important issues in the upcoming election.

Although AAPI adults generally trust the Democratic Party more than the Republican Party on many issues, their assessments of the Democratic Party itself remain divided.

Rebecca Larocco, a 45-year-old Korean American living in Corning, Iowa, voted for Trump in 2016 and leaned Republican in the midterm elections.

She approves of Trump's immigration policies; however, as the war with Iran continues to drive up gasoline prices, she has doubts about the way Trump is handling the economy.

"Where I am, gas prices have gone up by nearly $1.50 (a gallon)," she said.

"I never expected to be drawn into a war — it came completely out of the blue, and I'm not sure... I just hope they will do what they say, get our economy back on track, and reduce immigration and crime."

When thinking about the midterm elections, the economy remains the issue that the vast majority of AAPI adults care about most.

As the ongoing war in Iran drives up gasoline prices and other costs remain stubbornly high, Americans as a whole are deeply pessimistic about the state of the economy and regard it as a top priority in the midterm elections.

This includes AAPI adults: according to the polls, about nine in ten list the economy as one of the most important issues in the upcoming elections, and about eight in ten say the same about the cost of living.

For AAPI adults, the economy, the cost of living, and health care are significantly more important than other issues.

About seven in ten AAPI adults say health care is one of the most important issues in the election; by contrast, only about half say the same about foreign policy, crime, immigration, election integrity, or climate change.

Meanwhile, Trump's economic approval rating among AAPI adults has fallen by about 10 percentage points over the past year, and other signs suggest that his popularity within this group has also weakened.

At the end of 2024, as soon as the election had ended, about four in ten AAPI adults held a "somewhat" or "very" favourable view of Trump; today that share has dropped to about three in ten.

“The data shows that any progress he made during the 2024 election — Trump enjoyed a brief honeymoon period after the election and before Inauguration Day — has now largely disappeared,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, founder and executive director of AAPI Data.

Ren Takahashi, 57, lives in Universal City, Texas, and describes himself as a conservative, yet he voted for the Democrats in the past three presidential elections and for the Republicans in the midterms.

As for this midterm election, he is open to candidates who make the economy a priority.

"I want to see policies that serve the best interests of the American public," said Takahashi, a Japanese American.

"This may include cutting spending, balancing the US budget, lowering inflation, working to build a more stable economy, and finally improving the atmosphere between the far left and the far right."

Since Trump returned to the White House, AAPI adults' trust in the Democrats to handle many key issues has risen, while the Republicans have correspondingly lost some of that trust.

In a poll conducted in March 2025, AAPI adults were evenly divided over which party could better handle the economy and immigration.

Today, however, the Democratic Party leads by roughly 20 percentage points on both of these issues.

At the same time, about two-thirds of AAPI adults hold a "somewhat" or "very" negative view of the Republican Party, whereas those with a "somewhat" or "very" positive view account for only about a quarter.

However, although public trust in the Democratic Party on specific issues has risen somewhat, AAPI adults' overall attitude toward the party remains ambivalent.

About half (48%) of AAPI adults hold a "somewhat" or "very" negative view of the Democratic Party, while 44% hold a "somewhat" or "very" positive view.

Another AP-NORC survey of registered voters conducted in September also found that, although voters as a whole are deeply dissatisfied with Trump and the Republican Party, few believe that either party can solve the important problems.

Louise Ryder, 40, is a Democrat living in Chicago.

She firmly believes that the Democrats are superior to the Republicans on every issue, but at the same time says she is not satisfied with the way the Democrats govern.

"I don't think the Democrats are doing all that well, and I believe that as a party they need to make a lot of changes," she said.

"It's a feeling of helplessness — unless there is major change, neither party can get anything done."

Although some Republicans still support Trump, James Finley, a 74-year-old resident of Lenox, Massachusetts, said that Trump deserves a certain amount of understanding, since he cannot bring down persistently high prices overnight.

However, when speaking about the Republican Party as a whole, Finley's words were somewhat harsh.

"They have held the majority for several years now," said Finley, who is of Japanese descent.

"I think they could have made a bit more effort — or perhaps a great deal more — to push through certain bills that I had hoped would pass."

Nevertheless, he remains loyal to his party, because, as Finley says, "All I hear from the Democrats is that they want to take down Trump."

As the election approaches, many AAPI adults are concerned about issues such as disinformation, legal challenges to election results, and voter suppression.

About half of AAPI adults say that eligible voters being prevented from voting is a "major problem" in US elections, while roughly two-thirds consider attempts by foreign governments to influence election outcomes a "major" problem.

Looking ahead to the November elections, about half of AAPI adults are "extremely" or "very" concerned about false or inaccurate information regarding candidates, and roughly the same proportion share the same level of worry that the election results may face legal challenges.

Finley is unsure whether the voting process can be closely monitored to prevent undocumented or unregistered individuals from attempting to vote.

However, Gao Qiao, a conservative from Texas, is deeply worried that Trump might try to rig the election.

He said he was concerned that if the midterm election results went against Trump, Trump would amplify the claim of "election system fraud."

"(He will) make this a focal point for distracting the American public," he said.

Conducted from September 8 to 15, the poll surveyed 1,023 Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults in the United States, drawing its sample from NORC's probability-based Amplify AAPI panel, which is designed to represent Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.

The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.7 percentage points.

The poll is part of an ongoing project that explores the views of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders; because of small sample sizes and inadequate language representation, these views are often underrepresented in other surveys.
