Five people died when an Amazon cargo plane left the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday.

The plane hit a van on airport land.

All five people were inside the van.

The van carries workers who clean planes, authorities said.

Then the plane went through a fence.

It hit an SUV on a city street.

Five other people were hurt.

The pilot and co-pilot left the hospital, said Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.

Two people are still in very bad condition.

A third person is in stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the crash.

One thing they are checking is the lack of a system to slow down and stop fast planes at the end of runways.

Miami is not one of 120 U.S. airports with light, crushable material.

The Federal Aviation Administration says this material has saved about 500 lives.

Experts said Miami follows federal rules because it has a 1,000-foot safety area.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said planes keep leaving runways.

The board had suggested putting in these systems before.

She said people must use the suggestions, or similar sad events will happen again.

Investigators found the flight data recorder and are looking at it.

They also plan to talk to the pilot, co-pilot, and air traffic controllers.

The five people who died worked for Professional Ocean Service Corp., a company that cleans planes.

The company said it would not talk out of respect for the families.

The sheriff named the dead people.

They are Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47.

The plane was landing after a flight from Puerto Rico.

Storms were starting.

The NTSB said the plane went about 1,300 feet past the end of the runway.

Strong winds over 25 knots were reported.

Experts said a wind from behind may have pushed the plane past its landing point.

It is not clear why the pilot did not stop the landing.

Two of the airport's four runways were still closed Tuesday.

More than 225 flights were canceled Sunday and Monday.
