Five people died when an Amazon cargo plane went off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday.

All of them were inside a van that carries plane-cleaning workers, officials said.

The plane hit the van on airport land, then went through a fence and hit an SUV on a city street.

Five other people were hurt.

The pilot and co-pilot have left the hospital, said Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.

Two people are still in very serious condition, and a third person is in a stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the crash.

One thing they are checking is the lack of a system to slow down and stop fast planes at the end of runways.

Miami is not one of the 120 U.S. airports with light, crushable material.

The Federal Aviation Administration says this material has saved about 500 lives.

Experts said Miami seems to follow federal rules because it has a 1,000-foot safety area.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said planes keep going off runways even after the board suggested putting in such systems.

She said the board's suggestions must be used, or similar sad events will happen again.

Investigators found the flight data recorder and are studying it.

They also plan to talk with the pilot, co-pilot, and air traffic controllers.

The five people who died worked for Professional Ocean Service Corp., a company that cleans planes.

The company said it would not speak about the crash to respect the families.

The sheriff named the dead as Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47.

The plane was landing after a trip from Puerto Rico as storms were starting.

The NTSB said the plane went about 1,300 feet past the end of the runway.

Strong winds over 25 knots were reported, and experts said a wind from behind may have pushed the plane past its landing spot.

It is not clear why the pilot did not stop the landing.

Two of the airport's four runways were still closed on Tuesday, and more than 225 flights were canceled on Sunday and Monday.
