A federal judge in Missouri stopped the state on Tuesday.
The state cannot use its old congressional districts in the November election.
The judge made this decision just after the U.S. Supreme Court said no to an appeal.
The appeal came from Missouri’s Republican attorney general.
The legal fight started when Missouri’s top court made a ruling.
It said new districts, supported by President Donald Trump, could not be used.
That court said the new map was stopped automatically.
The reason is that citizens gave petition signatures.
They wanted a statewide vote on the map.
The U.S. Supreme Court let that ruling stand.
The new districts were used in the August primary.
The winners were already confirmed.
Then U.S. District Judge Stephen Clark gave a temporary order.
This order said Missouri must not use anything except the new Republican-backed districts.
The question of which map will be used in November is still open.
The new map changed the 5th Congressional District.
This district is held by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver.
The map moved parts of Kansas City into nearby Republican districts.
It also stretched Cleaver’s district into rural areas.
Missouri’s Republican secretary of state had rejected the petition.
But the state Supreme Court changed that decision.
The vote on the map will now be on the November ballot.
It will be called Proposition A.
