The Trump administration started building the border wall in west Texas.
This is in the Big Bend area.
It is the first big building work there.
Many people do not want it.
This is part of a $46 billion plan.
The plan is to put walls, barriers, roads and technology along the border.
President Donald Trump promised to finish the wall.
It was a key promise in his campaign.
Customs and Border Protection said workers are putting up wall panels.
This is in a 47-mile part of Hudspeth County.
People call it Big Bend 1.
The agency said the first panels went up on September 15.
A photo showed a crane lifting a steel panel.
The panel is 30 feet tall.
This work is not the same as a project in Big Bend National Park.
That project is near here.
Building there has stopped for now.
In the Big Bend area, CBP has faced opposition.
Landowners, environmental groups, business owners and ranchers are against it.
They say few people cross the border illegally in this faraway place.
Clara Benson started the No Big Bend Wall Coalition.
She said the group will keep fighting the plans.
She said the fight is not over.
CBP said it is building about 12 miles of barriers each week.
The border with Mexico is 2,000 miles long.
The agency said it recently reached 200 miles of new barriers.
This is since the second Trump administration started.
That speed is two times what agency head Rodney Scott said earlier this year.
The agency has also faced opposition from environmental groups.
A small town is worried about flooding.
Native Americans and landowners are also against it.
