On Monday, the government can send some people to other countries quickly. They cannot go back to their home country. A court said they must leave.
The court did not say why. One judge, Sonia Sotomayor, did not agree. Two other judges agreed with her.
Tricia McLaughlin from Homeland Security said people might be sent to other countries soon. She said this helps keep American people safe.
But a judge said one plane to South Sudan will not go now.
Some people on the plane in May were from Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cuba. They did bad things in America. Officials said they could not go back home fast.
Their lawyer Trina said they might go to jail, be hurt, or die if they return to South Sudan.
A judge in Boston said they can still talk about their problems in court. The people are now at a navy place in Djibouti.
This case is happening. The government wants to send many people back. These people live in the U.S. without papers.
Abigail Jackson from the White House said the President can make rules about people coming to the U.S. He can send bad people away. She said the court agrees with the President. He can send bad people who break laws away from our country. This makes our country safe.
Sotomayor wrote that the court's choice is bad for many people. She said it helps the Trump government, even if they did not follow the rules before.
She said the government can send people away. They do not tell them or let them talk. Two other judges agreed with her.
South Sudan is a new and poor country. It had many fights after it became free in 2011. Now, leaders have problems, and this could start another war.
The Justice Department said they are thinking about the paper to decide what to do next.
The court stopped a plan. This plan helped immigrants. They could say if another country was not safe for them. They could do this even if they had no more legal help.
He said sending people to South Sudan in May was wrong. He told the immigration workers to let the people speak with their lawyers. The immigration workers put the people in a big metal box in Djibouti. It was a very hard place for everyone.
Some countries do not want their people back from the U.S. So, the government made plans with Panama and Costa Rica. These countries will keep the people. In May, some people went to South Sudan. They only knew about it 16 hours before. Sotomayor said this.
Murphy works for President Biden. He said people can go to some countries. But he also said people must say if they are afraid of danger in another country.
A man from Guatemala was sent to Mexico by mistake. He said bad people hurt him there. Then, the government brought him back to the U.S.
The judges had a similar problem. Trump wanted to send people from Venezuela to a bad prison in El Salvador. These people were said to be in gangs. They could not easily go to court.
But the judges stopped people from leaving. They said people need time to ask a court for help before they go.
The court agreed with Trump before. So, his government can stop many immigrants from staying for a short time. About one million people will be affected.
