A federal judge in Massachusetts has stymied President Donald Trump's endeavor to overhaul electoral procedures, adjudicating in favor of Democratic state attorneys general who contended that the move constituted a violation of constitutional principles. An executive order promulgated by Trump in March, stipulating the necessity of citizenship documentation for voter registration, mandating the acceptance of postal ballots solely if received prior to Election Day, and conditioning the disbursement of federal electoral grant funding upon states' adherence to the newly imposed deadlines, has been deemed unconstitutional. The White House defended the order as a measure designed to safeguard "free, fair, and honest elections;" however, Judge Denise J. Casper posited that the states were likely to prevail in their legal challenges, asserting the Constitution's conspicuous absence of any explicit grant of power to the President regarding electoral matters. The ruling also enjoined enforcement of the provision within the executive order that mandated states' rejection of any postal or absentee ballots received post-Election Day. This represents the second juridical setback for Trump's electoral mandate, subsequent to a Washington D.C. judge's prior interdiction of discrete elements within the directive.
