A Massachusetts federal judge stymied President Trump's endeavor to overhaul the US electoral system, ruling in accordance with a cohort of Democratic state attorneys general who contended that the measures contravened constitutional precepts.
President Trump's March executive order sought to mandate documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration, restrict acceptance of absentee ballots to those received by election day, and conditionally allocate federal election funding to states contingent upon adherence to newly stipulated deadlines, measures the White House characterized as safeguarding "free, fair, and honest elections."
Nevertheless, Judge Dennis J. Casper, positing the states' high probability of success in their legal challenge, asserted the Constitution's conspicuous absence of specific conferral of electoral authority upon the President, thereby substantially impeding the executive order's stipulations mandating the rejection of postal and absentee ballots arriving post-Election Day; this constitutes the second juridical setback to President Trump's electoral executive order following a prior injunction against aspects of said directive by a Washington D.C. jurist.
