Mary Lou Retton, the well-known American gymnast, was arrested in her home state of West Virginia on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence (DUI). This happened on May 17 after police received reports of a Porsche being driven unsafely. When officers stopped the 57-year-old Retton, they noticed she smelled of alcohol, her speech was unclear, and there was a wine bottle in the passenger seat. She failed a sobriety test and refused both a roadside breath test and a blood test. Retton was later released after paying a $1,500 bond. Her lawyer, Edmund J. Rollo, has not yet commented on the situation. This arrest comes after it was revealed in 2023 that Retton was recovering from a rare type of pneumonia that required her to be in intensive care because her oxygen levels were very low.
