Homeland Security Secretary Kristie Noem stated on Thursday that federal law enforcement agencies are investigating social media posts made by former FBI Director James Comey, which she and other Republicans suggest contain messages inciting violence against President Donald Trump.
In an Instagram post, Cummy shared a photo of what appeared to be a deliberate arrangement of seashells on a beach, captioned: "A striking seashell composition from my beach stroll," with the shells seemingly forming the numerals "86 47."
Numerous figures formerly associated with the Trump administration, including Noun, have alleged that Comey advocated for the assassination of President Trump, the 47th President of the United States. Noun stated that "the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service are investigating this threat and will respond accordingly."
Merriam-Webster, the dictionary favored by the Associated Press, defines "86" as slang meaning "to discard," "to eliminate," or "to refuse service." While acknowledging the logical extension of the term to mean "to kill" as a recent development, the dictionary editors have refrained from formally including this definition due to concerns about its frequency of use and established currency.
The post was subsequently removed, and Cummy added, "I uploaded a photo of a seashell I found during a beach walk today, unaware that it could be interpreted as a political statement. I was not cognizant that some individuals associate the numerical configuration with violence."
Comey's initial posts ignited considerable outrage within conservative circles, with Donald Trump Jr. accusing Comey of inciting the assassination of his father.
Kash Patel, the current FBI Director, has acknowledged the existence of this post and stated that he is in consultation with the Secret Service and its director regarding the matter.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Legislative, Political, and Intergovernmental Affairs James Blair highlighted the acutely sensitive timing of the post, released while Trump was on a tour of the Middle East. Blair asserted on X (formerly Twitter) that "This constitutes an unequivocal incitement from James Comey for terrorists and hostile regimes to assassinate the President of the United States during his Middle East tour."
James Comey, who served as FBI Director from 2013 to 2017, was dismissed amidst his investigation into alleged collusion between Russian officials and the Trump 2016 presidential campaign during President Trump's first term; he subsequently chronicled his career in his best-selling memoir, *A Higher Loyalty*.
Currently, he is active as a crime fiction writer and is promoting his latest book, *FDR Drive*, which is due to be released on Tuesday.
