On Thursday, the Supreme Court seemed likely to uphold the block on citizenship restrictions put in place by President Donald Trump, as they explored ways to limit the reach of nationwide court orders.
It wasn't clear how such a decision would be made, but most judges worried about the possible consequences if the Trump administration were allowed, even temporarily, to deny citizenship to children born to undocumented people in the United States.
Los jueces analizaron los argumentos presentados en las apelaciones urgentes del gobierno de Trump. Estas apelaciones buscaban revocar las decisiones de tribunales inferiores que habían bloqueado las restricciones de ciudadanía a nivel nacional.
Nationwide injunctions have become a key check on Trump's attempts to change the government, causing increasing frustration for the Republican president and his supporters.
Since January, when Trump started his second term, judges across the country have issued 40 temporary injunctions, Attorney General John Sauer told the court during the opening of a two-hour debate.
The administration has urgently asked the Court to address birthright citizenship, among other pressing immigration-related issues.
A case like this could be presented and resolved quickly, and the solution might even be applied nationwide.
However, when questioned by Judge Amy Coney Barrett and others, Sauer suggested that the Trump administration might oppose such a lawsuit or try to delay class action cases.
Arguments presented to the Supreme Court regarding urgent appeals are unusual. The judges typically focus on the central issue of the case.
However, the government didn't ask the Court to examine the wider issue now. If the Court agrees with the government about nationwide injunctions, it's uncertain how long different rules about citizenship will affect children born in the USA.
A decision is expected by the end of June.
