In Washington, some politicians want to use up to $5 billion each year from the government. This money would help families pay for their children to go to schools that are not public, like private or religious schools. This is a new plan to use government money for private schools.
A new plan would let parents in the country choose a different school for their children, not just the local public school. Almost all families could use this plan, but not those who make a lot more money than the average in their area.
People who like private schools want families in schools that are not good to have more choices.
Senator Bill Cassidy said that when parents can choose the best school for their child, the (American Dream) can happen.
Rich people could give money or shares to the program. Then, they would get all their money back because they would pay less tax. This means people who own shares would not have to pay taxes they would usually pay if they gave away or moved their shares.
People who didn't like the idea said it would help rich people and hurt public schools, where most students go. They also said it was a way for clever rich people to avoid paying taxes by pretending to give money.
At the same time, the government is making the Education Department smaller and giving less money to public schools. This means $1 billion less for help with mental health and for training teachers.
This is a big problem, said Sasha Pudelski. She said that states with voucher programs often help families who were already paying for private school. This makes the problem of wasting money and cheating in these programs around the country even worse.
Some states, like Texas, have programs to help families pay for private schools. People who like public schools worry that these programs could mean fewer students and less money for public schools. This could leave public schools with less help for families who choose them.
