WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans in the House of Representatives showed their plan to save money for President Donald Trump's plan. They want to cut about $880 billion from a program called Medicaid. This will help pay for lower taxes.
The new law is very long and is causing a big political fight about health care. This is the biggest fight since 2017, when Republicans tried and failed to change Obamacare when Trump was president.
Republicans say they want to stop bad spending to save money, but Democrats worry that many people will not have health care. A report says about 8.6 million people could lose their health care in the next ten years.
Brett Guthrie said that saving this money helps them continue the Trump tax cuts. He said this keeps their promise to families who work hard. Brett Guthrie is in charge of a group that deals with money for health care.
But Democrats said the cuts are bad and are another way to try and stop Obamacare.
Millions of Americans will lose their health insurance, said Rep. Frank Pallone. He said that if this new law passes, hospitals will close, older people won't get the care they need, and costs will go up for millions of people.
This week, Republicans will have many public meetings, day and night, to talk about different parts of a big bill with tax cuts and spending cuts. They want to finish this bill before the end of May.
We don't know what will happen with politics in the future.
A Republican senator, Josh Hawley, said it would be wrong and bad for politics to cut health care so people pay less tax.
Eleven groups in the House are writing parts of a plan. Republicans want to save at least $1.5 trillion. This money will help keep the tax cuts from 2017. These tax cuts will finish at the end of this year. They started when Trump was president.
But the important Energy and Commerce Committee was watched a lot. This committee had to find ways to save $880 billion. They did this mostly by spending less on health care. They also stopped green energy plans that started when Biden was president. A first look at the numbers showed their plans would save $912 billion over ten years. Most of this money, at least $715 billion, would come from changes in health care.
They want to save money by changing health care programs. One program is Medicaid, which gives health care to many Americans for almost no cost. Another program is the Affordable Care Act, which now helps millions more people get health care.
To get Medicaid, healthy adults without children might need to work, study, or help others for 80 hours each month. They would also need to prove they can be in the program two times a year instead of one. The new rules would also check people's income more carefully to get health insurance from the Affordable Care Act.
This could make more people leave the program. It might also make it hard for some people to keep getting help, especially if they have to travel far to an office to prove how much money they make. But Republicans believe this will help the program only support people who truly need it.
Also, some people on Medicaid who make more than about $32,000 a year for a family of four might have to pay for some health services. But they would not have to pay for visits to the emergency room, care before a baby is born, doctor visits for children, or regular doctor check-ups. The most they would pay is $35 for each visit.
Also, people could not get Medicaid if their house is worth more than $1 million.
The new law wants to stop immigrants who are living here without papers from getting help with healthcare.
Other changes would mean all states pay more.
Many states have more people in their health programs because the government helped them, but the new law would stop a little extra money that started during the pandemic.
States would stop a special tax that helps pay for healthcare for people who don't have much money.
The parts of the law about energy are shorter. But they stop plans to fight climate change that President Biden signed into law.
It suggests stopping money for different energy projects and helping new natural gas and oil pipe plans happen more quickly.
