At least 10 people in the U.S. got sick from listeria linked to ready-to-eat foods, and a company is recalling some products voluntarily, government officials said.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that officials from the government, states, and local areas are investigating the illness linked to food made by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC in San Fernando, California. The FDA says that the ten people who got sick were in California and Nevada and needed to go to the hospital.
The agency stated that the products were sold in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington in places like shops and restaurants, including hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports, and on planes.
Symptoms of Listeria usually appear within two weeks after eating food that contains the bacteria. In mild cases, you might have a fever, muscle pain, feel sick, feel tired, vomit or have diarrhea. More serious symptoms can include a headache, a stiff neck, feeling confused, having trouble keeping your balance, and fits (convulsions).
Government officials said they started looking into the recent outbreak last year but didn't have enough proof to find where the infections came from. They said the investigation began again in April when food safety inspectors found a type of bacteria called listeria in food samples from Fresh & Ready Foods that was the same as the type causing the outbreak.
Fresh & Ready Foods announced in a statement that they immediately took steps to fix the problem, such as removing equipment.
The FDA found that six out of the ten people who got sick with listeria had been in the hospital before. The FDA also found that food from Fresh & Ready Foods was given to patients in at least three of the hospitals where they had been treated before.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they took test samples from sick people from December 2023 to September 2024.
Fresh & Ready is voluntarily recalling some products. You can find these products by looking at the 'use by' dates, which are from April 22 to May 19 this year. The products are sold under the brand names Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away.
