Subsequent to the initial nominee's withdrawal, President Trump pivoted to endorsing Dr. Casey Means, a former physician and wellness influencer with close ties to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as his choice for Surgeon General, a position of considerable public health consequence.
In a Wednesday social media post, Trump averred that Dr. Means possessed the "perfect MAHA credentials," an acronym derived from the slogan "Make America Healthy Again," contending that she would endeavor to eradicate chronic disease and ameliorate the health and welfare of the American populace.
"Her academic achievements and lifetime contributions are, quite simply, outstanding," observed Trump, adding that "Dr. Casey Means possesses the latent capacity to emerge as one of the most preeminent Surgeons General in the annals of American history."
This manoeuvre compelled Trump to withdraw Janet Nesheiwat, a erstwhile medical contributor for Fox News, from contention for the post, marking at least the second instance wherein a Trump healthcare nomination has been thus relegated from Senate deliberation. Ms. Nesheiwat had been scheduled to appear before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on Thursday for confirmation proceedings.
Dr. Means and her brother, the erstwhile lobbyist Karry Means, have been pivotal counselors in Mr. Kennedy's tumultuous 2024 presidential bid, facilitating a concord last summer whereby Mr. Kennedy purportedly endorsed Mr. Trump. They have been observed in concert with several of Mr. Trump's principal proponents, garnering encomiums from conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and podcaster Joe Rogan. Karry Means now serves as a counselor in the White House, frequently appearing on telecasts to champion constraints on SNAP benefits, the expurgation of fluoride from municipal water supplies, and sundry other MAHA tenets.
Dr. Casey Means, having eschewed governmental tenure and discontinued her surgical residency due to a disillusionment with conventional medical paradigms, established "Levels," a health tech enterprise enabling users to meticulously monitor biometric markers such as glycemia, concurrently generating revenue through the promotion of dietary supplements, emollients, infusions, and sundry merchandise peddled across her digital social media platforms.
Within interviews and articles, Dr. Means and her brother expound upon the intricate web of influence exerted by a corrupt food conglomerate, ensnaring Americans in deleterious dietary habits and fostering reliance on the pharmaceutical industry's daily regimens for the management of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic ailments, thereby implicating this entity as a root cause of the nation's health crisis.
Numerous health professionals would concur that the preponderant prevalence of processed victuals in the American diet contributes to corpulence and its attendant afflictions; however, Dr. Means posits a more granular association, linking alterations in diet and lifestyle to a plethora of conditions including infertility, Alzheimer's, depression, and erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Means, in a 2024 book co-authored with his brother, posits that virtually all chronic health conditions addressed by Western medicine are the downstream ramifications of our cellular machinery being unduly burdened by contemporary lifestyles.
Dr. Means largely disavows Mr. Kennedy's controversial and scientifically refuted perspectives on vaccines, although her website advocates for more exhaustive scrutiny of their safety and proposes facilitating patient litigation against pharmaceutical manufacturers in instances of vaccine-induced adverse effects, a legal recourse federally circumscribed since the late 1980s to incentivize vaccine innovation sans the exigency of onerous personal injury suits.
Having undergone her surgical training at Stanford University, she has garnered a significant online following by critiquing the prevailing medical paradigm and advocating for the efficacy of whole foods and lifestyle modifications in the remediation of insidious conditions such as unhealthy obesity, diabetes, and a panoply of other chronic ailments.
Should she be confirmed as Surgeon General, Dr. Means would be tasked with spearheading the propagation of Kennedy's comprehensive MAHA agenda, which includes the removal of thousands of additives and chemicals from American foods, the extirpation of conflicts of interest within federal agencies, and the incentivization of salubrious foodstuffs in school lunches and other nutritional programs.
Dr. Nesheiwat, Trump's initial nominee, serves as a medical director at a New York-based urgent care company, frequently appearing on Fox News to furnish her medical acumen and perspectives, and is a fervent supporter of Trump, publicly sharing photographs of herself with him on social media; notably, she is also the sister-in-law of former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who was himself appointed by Trump as his UN ambassador.
However, she has recently incurred opprobrium from Laura Loomer, a far-right confederate of Mr. Trump and a party to the dismissal of several members of the President's National Security Council. Loomer, earlier this week, excoriated her on X (formerly Twitter), positing that an "acolyte of the pro-COVID vaccine cabal, presently embroiled in medical malpractice litigation, and sans formal medical training within the United States, is an unacceptable appointee for the esteemed position of Surgeon General."
Independent freelance journalist Anthony Clark last month reported that despite having earned a medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in St. Maarten, Nessewat had claimed to possess a degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The White House withdrew Nessewat's nomination, according to anonymous sources with knowledge of the matter, due to doubts regarding her prospects for Senate confirmation.
On Wednesday, Nesheiwat avowed on social media her unwavering support for President Trump and her anticipation of assuming a senior policy role, collaborating closely with Secretary Kennedy, to bring about the realization of "Make America Healthy Again!" She affirmed her steadfast commitment, stating that her primary focus remains, and indeed has not wavered from, the melioration of the health and welfare of all American citizens.
The Surgeon General, functioning as the nation's physician, presides over a corps of 6,000 US Public Health Service personnel and possesses the prerogative to issue admonitions concerning incipient public health exigencies.
In March, the White House withdrew its nomination of former Florida Republican Representative Dave Weldon for Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), citing concerns from key Republican senators regarding his skeptical stance on vaccines and the concomitant lack of requisite support for confirmation.
