Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen stated Thursday that federal law enforcement is investigating social media posts by former FBI Director James Comey, which she and other Republicans suggest incite violence against President Donald Trump, alleging a violation of federal statutes.
In a recent Instagram dispatch, Comey cryptically captioned a photograph of shells artfully arranged on a beach as "86 47," the image showcasing a striking resemblance to the numerical sequence formed by the scattered marine detritus.
Numerous Trump administration affiliates, Nume amongst them, alleged Comey was inciting the assassination of the 47th President, Donald Trump. Nume stated, "The Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service are investigating this threat and will respond accordingly."
According to Merriam-Webster, the lexicon utilized by the Associated Press, "86" functions as slang denoting the act of discarding, eliminating, or refusing service; the dictionary elaborates that a more recent appropriation encompasses the meaning "to kill" as a logical extension of the aforementioned definitions, albeit acknowledging its nascent and comparatively undocumented usage, thus precluding its formal inclusion at this juncture.
The aforementioned post was subsequently expunged; thereafter, Comey penned a statement elucidating that a photograph of seashells, previously uploaded during a littoral perambulation, was misinterpreted as bearing a surreptitious political valence, lamenting the unanticipated construal of the numerical configuration therein as an allusion to violence by certain observers.
Comey's initial post ignited a conflagration of conservative outrage across social media, encompassing accusations that Donald Trump Jr. had ostensibly solicited the assassination of his father.
Kash Patel, the incumbent FBI Director, has reportedly acknowledged cognizance of the aforementioned post and is currently in consultation with the Secret Service and its directorate regarding its implications.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Legislative Affairs, Political Affairs, and Public Policy, James Blair, contextualized the communiqué's inopportune release, emphasizing the acutely sensitive temporal juncture coinciding with President Trump's diplomatic sojourn in the Middle East.
Blair, taking to X, characterised the statement as "an unequivocal exhortation by James Comey for terrorists and adversarial regimes to assassinate a U.S. President on a Middle Eastern visit."
James Comey, who served as FBI Director from 2013 to 2017, was dismissed by Trump during the latter's initial presidential term amidst an investigation into the nexus between Russian officials and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign; Comey chronicles his trajectory in the bestselling memoir, "A Higher Loyalty."
Currently a practicing crime novelist, he is engaged in promotional activities for his latest work, "FDR Drive," a title slated for release on Tuesday.
