John Roberts said judges must be free to stop the president or Congress if they do too much.

Roberts, who is in charge of the Supreme Court, said it is very important for judges to be able to make decisions on their own.

He said the Constitution's only new idea was to have three equal parts of government. He also said this idea only works if the judges can make decisions on their own.

The old judge said things he had said before, but people liked them and clapped.

When people asked Roberts about Trump and his friends wanting to remove judges because they didn't like their decisions, Roberts said almost the same thing he said in March. He said, "You should not remove judges just because you don't agree with what they decide."

Roberts also said he will not stop working soon, because it is almost 20 years since he started working at the country's most important court.

He came to his home city less than a week after Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said it was very bad to attack judges.

Jackson spoke to judges and lawyers in Puerto Rico. She said that judges everywhere, including maybe many of them, are often attacked and not respected every day now.

Jackson wrote on the court's website that the attacks were a big problem that everyone knew about, even though she did not say Trump's name in her talk.

The president, Stephen Miller, and Elon Musk have criticized judges who stopped parts of Trump's plans. They sometimes attacked them personally. For example, Trump called the judge who stopped people from being sent away a 'radical left lunatic.'

People have tried to scare judges by sending pizzas they didn't want to their homes and their children's homes. Some of these pizzas were sent using the name of Daniel Anderl. Daniel was the son of Judge Esther Salas. A lawyer who was angry killed Daniel at their home in 2020.

Senator Dick Durbin said these deliveries were threats to show the judge or their family members live at these addresses.

Trump has mostly not criticized the highest court. This court is looking at some urgent requests about decisions from lower courts that were against him.

The president has had some good and bad results with the judges. On Tuesday, the judges voted to allow the president's rule about transgender people in the military again, while courts still decide if the rule is legal. The three judges who did not agree voted against it.

Also, the court has stopped some people from Venezuela, who they say are in gangs, from being sent back for a short time. They used an old law from the 1700s that was for times of war. The judges also said that people cannot be sent away without being able to speak about it in court first.
