Some Republicans in the House seem to be changing their minds a little about cutting the Medicaid program a lot. This is because some Republicans who are more in the middle do not want to stop cheap healthcare for people in their areas.
A new report says millions of Americans could lose government health help because Republicans want to save money.
The report said that if they chose those plans, fewer people would be in Medicaid and more people would not have health insurance.
The results made people unsure if the leader of the House, Mike Johnson, could pass the bill by the date he chose.
Politicians are worried about the economy. This is partly because of President Trump's plans, like the trade war. The trade war could make things cost more, make it hard to buy some goods, and cause people to lose their jobs. The politicians want to continue the tax cuts that began in 2017. But they also want to spend less money on other things to pay for the tax cuts. This would also help stop the country's debt from growing too much.
This week, Johnson met with different Republicans in his office. He met especially with those who have difficult elections soon. These Republicans are worried about big spending cuts that would harm their areas.
The Democrats, who asked for the report, said the results were good for them.
Congressman Frank Pallone said this report shows that the Republican plan will make millions of people lose their health care.
Republicans in the House of Representatives said after a meeting on Tuesday that Speaker Johnson and other leaders decided not to make some changes they had talked about for how the government helps states pay for healthcare for poor people.
Jeff Van Drew, a politician, said the changes to health care for poor people will not happen.
A Republican from New York, Nick LaLota, said that Trump does not want to cut Medicaid. He also said that many Republicans now agree they should cut other parts of Medicaid instead.
LaLota had some other ideas. He said people who get Medicaid should have to work. He also said people who get help should show they still need it two times a year, not just one time. And he wants to be sure that immigrants who are in the U.S. without legal papers do not get help.
But some Republicans, like those in the House Freedom Caucus, want to cut government spending more to stop the government losing a lot of money because of lower taxes.
Medicaid is a program that states and the government work on together. It helps 71 million adults.
Republicans are thinking about ways to spend less government money on the program. They might pay a smaller part of the health costs for people in the program. Sometimes the government pays a lot, like 90%.
They are also thinking about putting a limit on how much the government spends on each person in Medicaid, but it seems fewer politicians support that idea now.
The CBO said these changes could save a lot of money, but about 10 million people might lose their health insurance.
It seems that they are not going to happen.
Republicans still want to change Medicaid. They might limit how much states can tax health care companies. This tax helps states get more money from the government. This change could save a lot of money, billions of dollars. But a report says about 8 million people might lose their health insurance.
