The U.S. Air Force Secretary is Troy Meink.
He recently said the United States has put weapons in space.
He did not say what the weapons are.
He did not say how they work.
He did not say if they target other objects in space.
Other countries also do not share many details about space weapons.
The 2026 Global Counterspace Capabilities Report comes from a nonprofit group.
The group is called the Secure World Foundation.
The report uses public information.
It lists five kinds of counterspace capabilities.
It looks at systems from 13 countries.
These include the U.S., Russia, China, India, Australia, France, Iran, and Israel.
Some satellites can move near other spacecraft.
They can inspect them, disable them, or destroy them.
There are also missiles from the ground, air, or sea.
These missiles destroy satellites by hitting them.
The report also covers electronic warfare, like jamming.
It covers lasers and high-power microwaves.
These can blind or damage satellite sensors.
It also covers cyber operations against space networks.
Victoria Samson works at the Secure World Foundation.
She said the existence and location of satellites in orbit is fairly clear.
But their capabilities and intended uses are harder to understand.
A U.N. register links each object to a responsible country.
But countries do not have to give details about an object's purpose.
In 2021, China tested a satellite with a robotic arm.
The arm can grab a system and move it out of orbit.
In 2022, China used such a system to tow one of its dead satellites out of orbit.
Two years ago, the U.S. warned that Russia was building a new space-based weapon against satellites.
But the White House said the danger was not coming soon.
Russia denied building such a weapon.
The Outer Space Treaty was made in 1967.
It bans putting nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit.
Analysts say it does not cover some modern problems.
Jessica West works at Project Ploughshares.
She said the legal framework needs to be "fundamentally changed."
Michelle Hanlon works at the University of Mississippi School of Law.
She said there is a "gap" in the treaty about conventional weapons.
Samson said talks on a new framework have stopped.
This is because countries do not agree on what counts as a space weapon.
Many capabilities can be used for two purposes.
