China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Monday.

Amodei had asked the U.S. to limit China's AI abilities.

He wrote an essay that came out on Saturday.

In it, he warned that a Chinese lead in AI would put the U.S. and the world in danger.

He urged the U.S. to keep restricting sales of advanced AI chips to China.

He also wanted limits on chipmaking equipment.

A ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said Amodei's warnings were harmful, not helpful.

He said all sides should work together on AI.

He added that fearmongering and fierce competition would only disrupt global AI governance.

Chinese officials have also raised their own concerns about AI.

A top security official blamed "certain nations," meaning the U.S.

He said they use their AI advantages to block other countries' innovation.

On Monday, President Donald Trump rejected calls to slow down AI development.

He called such efforts a "SICK conspiracy" that could let China pass the U.S.

Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to talk about AI governance.

Their meeting is planned for Sept. 24.

Chinese companies have built strong AI models that are often cheaper than U.S. ones.

By some measures, they are just as capable.

Amodei predicted AI "agents" could take over the internet in six to 12 months.

He said this could happen without researchers working together.

He said global pacing would require working with China.

China's state-run Global Times dismissed his essay.

It called it a veiled call to "contain" China and a "Cold War playbook."

The FBI and other U.S. agencies recently said Chinese developers had "distilled" abilities from top U.S. models.

China's Commerce Ministry rejected that claim as groundless.
